【摘要】:TSCsareusedinanumberofcriticalindustrialcomponents.TSCscanbeexpectedtocontainmeasurablelevelsofporosityandlineardetachment.Accurateandconsistentevaluationofspecimensisessentialtoensuretheintegrityofthecoatingandproperadherencetothesubstrate.Example1:Byuseofinappropriatemetallographicmethods,theapparentamountofporosityandlineardetachmentdisplayedbyagivenspecimencanbeincreased,byexcessiveedgerounding,ordecreasedbysmearingofmaterialintovoids.Thereforeinaccuratelevelsofporosityandlineardetachmentwillbereportedevenwhentheaccuracyofthemeasurementtechniqueisacceptable.Example2:Inconsistentmetallographicpreparationmethodscancausetheapparentamountofvoidstovaryexcessivelyindicatingapoorlycontrolledthermalsprayprocess,whiletheuseofconsistentpracticewillregularlydisplaythetruemicrostructureandverifytheconsistencyofthethermalsprayprocess.DuringthedevelopmentofTSCprocedures,metallographicinformationisnecessarytovalidatetheefficacyofaspecificapplication.Crosssectionsareusuallytakenperpendiculartothelongaxisofthespecimenandpreparedtorevealinformationconcerningthefollowing:Variationsinstructurefromsurfacetosubstrate,Thedistributionofunmeltedparticlesthroughoutthecoating,Thedistributionoflineardetachmentthroughoutthecoating,Thedistributionofporositythroughoutthecoating,Thepresenceofcontaminationwithinthecoating,Thethicknessofthecoating(topcoatandbondcoat,whereapplicable),Thepresenceofinterfacialcontamination,Theintegrityoftheinterfacebetweenthecoatingandsubstrate,and,Theintegrityofthecoatingmicrostructurewithrespecttochemistry.1.1Thisguidecoversrecommendationsforsectioning,cleaning,mounting,grinding,andpolishingtorevealthemicrostructuralfeaturesofthermalsprayedcoatings(TSCs)andthesubstratestowhichtheyareappliedwhenexaminedmicroscopically.Becauseofthediversityofavailableequipment,thewidevarietyofcoatingandsubstratecombinations,andthesensitivityofthesespecimenstopreparationtechnique,theexistenceofaseriesofrecommendedmethodsformetallographicpreparationofthermalsprayedcoatingspecimensishelpful.Adherencetothisguidewillprovidepractitionerswithconsistentandreproducibleresults.AdditionalinformationconcerningstandardpracticesformetallographicpreparationcanbefoundinPracticeE3.1.2Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
